At Gate O is "The Doughboy Statue." It is one of many World War I memorial statues cast by sculptor E.M. (Dick) Viquesney of Indiana.
After the war, in which Americans saw combat in 1917-18, numerous communities commissioned doughboy statues to honor the local war heroes. The Woodside Doughboy is one of nine such statues erected in New York City’s parks. The monument was commissioned by the Woodside Community Council at a cost of $5,000.
The 7-foot "Doughboy" sold for about $1,000 plus the cost of plaques and pedestals. The low cost enabled towns that couldn't otherwise afford a memorial, to have one.
Where the ‘Doughboy’ statue may be the best known example of Viquesney’s artistic output, it is his fantastic ‘Spirit of the American Navy’ statue which has become the rare jewel of WWI memorials.

Viquesney's 1936 list shows "2 Doughboys, 2 Sailors", reinforcing the likelihood that Viquesney's "2+2" brochure claim was a typo, since all four statues (the two "standard" Doughboys, the Sailor, and a variant design Doughboy), were all dedicated at Palatka on November 11, 1927, according to newspaper articles.
