The Military Working Dog Teams National Monument is a U.S. National Monument located at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. It was founded by John C. Burnam, published author and Vietnam Veteran Infantryman and German Shepherd Scout Dog Handler (1966-1968). The monument was designed by the John Burnam Monument Foundation.
The very first national monument to military canines will be unveiled after the annual Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif., January 1, 2013. A military dog-themed flower float will lead spectators to Victory Park, where the bronze sculpture will make its national debut.
Lackland is home to the U.S. Armed Forces center that has trained dogs for all branches of the military since 1958. The sculpture, built with private donations, features the four major breeds used since World War Two: Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever, and Belgian Malinois.
The names of some of Mayo’s favorite dogs during the war are incorporated into the soldier statue’s helmet. The soldier’s watch is set to 11:11 – Veteran’s Day. So far, Mayo has raised $105,000 for the $130,000 statue.
The War Dog Memorial was erected in 1923. The unveiling was attended by representatives of every nation that fought in the Great War. The historic sculpture is listed in the art inventories catalog of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and is described as follows: “A German Shepherd wearing a Red Cross blanket stands on a rough-hewn boulder.
