A proposed Bolívar statue by Giovanni Turini, to be placed on the same base, was rejected in 1897. The current Bolívar statue, by Sally James Farnham, was installed in 1921.
Saint-Gaudens also casted the bronze statue of Diana that once chaperoned the city atop White’s Madison Square Garden. The Sherman statue was dedicated in 1903 and has guarded Central Park with stoic pride since.

Over the years the statue’s original gold-leaf peeled away and the statue became corroded and discolored. In 1989 the monument was conserved by the Central Park Conservancy’s Grand Army Plaza/Pulitzer Fountain Partnership with funding assistance from the David Schwartz Foundation and the Metropolitan Chapter of the Victorian Society.
