Dogs Go To War. One of the more interesting aspects of Doberman history, was the use of this breed during war times. Usually, we think of German Shepherds as the dog of the military, but the Doberman was also used.
The memorial will be about 100 square feet. At its center will stand a bronze statue of a dog handler surrounded by statues of the four most common war dog breeds: Doberman pinscher,German shepherd,Labrador retriever and Belgian malinois. A granite wall etched with war dog images and history will be placed behind the statues.
The U.S. Working Dog Teams National Monument, which honors military dogs that have served since World War II. The monument is the brainchild of Vietnam War veteran canine handler John C. Burnham.
